Behind the Pillar

  • Courage

Recently I’ve been spending a lot of time talking to people about fear.

Honestly, I think this a good thing.

If you’re experiencing moments of fear in your life, I’d tend to believe that you’re doing things that make you uncomfortable.

Or you’re a stuntman and every day there’s a chance you might die.

Either way, fear is not a bad thing.

It’s our bodies way of acknowledging that this moment is making us uncomfortable.

And comfort is one of our biggest killers of growth and success and health.

We need to experience fear.

We need to put ourselves in situations where we don’t feel safe.

This forces us into opportunities of growth.

Now, I do think it’s important that I say I don’t think you should be seeking life threatening fear.

If you could die from the thing you’re about to do, perhaps it’s not the right thing to be doing.

However, what I’ve found is that in most instances anymore we experience fear from discomfort.

We also experience fear from lack of preparation.

Our mind is designed to keep us safe.

We seek comfort and familiarity.

For you to become you’re best self, you need to fight against this natural wiring, and pursue the thing that creates fear.

What thing are you doing this year that scares you?

  • Overcoming Fear

The first thing I want to make sure I emphasize is there is no such thing as fearless.

We can’t eliminate fear.

Our brains are designed to find threats and avoid them.

What I’ve found though is many of these threats we attach fear to today, are not actually threats.

This is where we can develop courage.

This is where we can learn to walk with fear.

When faced with a moment that creates a feeling of fear this is typically how I choose to approach it.

First, we must determine why I’m feeling this fear?

What kind of fear is this?

Is this fear because I’m standing in front of a bear and it could kill me?

Or

Is this the fear of asking my boss for a raise, speaking to a group of peers, asking the pretty girl out?

In both situations we will experience fear in the same way.

However, obviously the bear situation requires a much different response and to act quickly.

Once we determine that this fear is being caused by something other than a life threatening situation, I like to ask these 2 simple questions.

"What’s the worst that could happen if I choose to step into this moment?”

Then I try to come up with the most outlandish results of taking action.

The funny thing is, no matter how creative I get, it never ends with me dying from the action.

Once I determine that death is off the table, I look at the situation from a different angle.

I ask, “What opportunity could I miss if I choose to pass on this situation?”

This changes the focus to why I want to take on this moment.

Perhaps I miss out on a raise.

I miss a chance to impact the world through a speech.

I miss meeting the girl of my dreams.

When we start to look at what we might miss out on we start to shift our attention to the good that could come of this moment.

That shift can often help lead us into action.

Ultimately, you’re going to have to find a way to act while feeling fear in most instances.

Having the answers to those questions won’t eliminate the fear.

However, I’ve found that it gives me the answers I need to step forward and walk with fear.

If the worst thing that could happen is I fail, people laugh, I miss out on a sale (that I didn’t have anyway), but on the flip side this moment could change my life for the better, it’s time to act.

There’s a lot more we can talk about when it comes to fear, but give this a shot next time you have to act with fear.

Good luck.

A World of Greatness

The Lions won their first playoff game since 1991 this last weekend. They have been a complete dumpster fire for a large portion of that time between playoff wins during the last 32 years. It takes an incredible leader to change things around like that and this speech from Dan Campbell speaks to the passion and belief he had to being the change he wanted to see in Detroit.

There are people pursuing greatness all over the world and putting out some incredible content for us to consume. Recently came across an artist and thought his voice was pretty special, so I thought I’d share it here. Not sure who Tyler Braden is, but I hope he continues to pursue greatness and develop his talents.

Sometimes life just needs a good laugh. I fight people who choose to pursue comedy in anyway a special gift to this world. I’ve seen this clip a few times now, but still laugh every time. Hope you get a good laugh and enjoy this as well.

Need a Coach?

As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.

It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.

When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.

Have you got something big coming up?

Need someone to help organize the path forward?
