Today’s Quote
If you want to change your life you have to raise your standards.
Behind the Pillars
Commit to Higher Standards
Softball practice started last week.
It was a good first week, but one thing really stood out to me.
We’re changing the standard of excellence for this program.
There is a new level of accountability and expectation that we’re bringing to the table.
And it’s clear that many of them have never been asked to live to this level.
I’m excited to see what changes take place.
We need standards.
They set the boundaries for acceptable behavior.
Much like purpose is our North Star in life, standards are our SOP (Standard Operating System) to get there.
When we have high and strong standards we hold ourself accountable to our choices and actions.
Without these standards we easily get lost and find ourselves adrift.
The key for creating success in life, on a team, in an organization is the rules you set for how you’re expected to act.
Each rule needs to have a purpose.
Each rule needs to be respected and followed.
And we must hold ourself accountable to adhering to these rules.
Set the bar high and pursue excellence.
Coaches Corner
Setting and Living Better Standards
Standards are the rules for your life.
Things like always be 10 minutes early.
Never hit snooze
Do what you say
Tell the truth
Standards don’t have to be complicated to work.
They just have to keep us on track to becoming the person we hope to be.
They should force us to raise the bar and do what is necessary to succeed.
Simple standards are the best.
Never cut corners, tell the truth, be on time.
Each of these are simple in nature, but difficult to live by regularly.
These are the best types of standards because you understand the expectation, and you have the choice to live up to them or not.
By living life to higher standards you slowly start to push yourself into the realm of excellence.
Every great person, organization, team has a set of standards that are expected to be followed.
The stronger we are at holding ourself to those standards the better our life becomes.
I’ve mentioned this before that we seek the path of least resistance.
It’s human nature to find the easy way.
Standards help us avoid trying to take shortcuts that don’t exist because they sound easy.
Our standards remind us that we’re not just living with purpose we’re living on purpose.
Have I sold you on the importance and power of standards yet?
If so here’s 3 easy ways to start to build your standards:
Write them down
They don’t mean anything if you don’t have them somewhere.
In your head is great, but when you’re first creating them, you need to see them.
Changing your standards is like changing a habit, so it will take time and you have to learn to change your behavior.
Seeing your standards in front of you regularly will only help.
Create a system to hold yourself accountable.
Standards are great, but they mean nothing if you don’t hold yourself to them.
You can write down the best standards ever, but if your actions don’t align, so what.
This is almost more important than the standards themselves.
Only choose standards that you’re willing to uphold.
Don’t set a standard of wake up at 5a if you know you won’t keep it.
This is why I have never hit snooze.
If I set my alarm I get up to my alarm.
It’s not about the time, but the discipline to do what I set out to do.
Never miss twice.
You’re going to miss on your standards.
We’re human, we make mistakes.
The key to consistently living to higher standards is to never miss twice.
Just like when building a new habit or routine, don’t let one bad moment or day become your life.
Acknowledge the mistake, accept it and move forward.
You’re going to miss again, just never twice.
As you can see I believe standards are an important part of living life on purpose.
Start to build and create the standards you want to live by.
We become what we accept.
Don’t accept less than excellence from yourself and you’ll slowly start to raise the bar.
Good luck out there!
A World of Greatness
I’ve talked about Dewayne several times in a variety of ways. He’s a 3 time captain for Duke Football, but today I’m mentioning him because on Thursday he’s competing at the NFL Combine. If you’re not busy, tune in and show him some support and love as he chases his dreams of playing in the NFL. Proud of you big man, keep pushing!
I recently found Andrew on Instagram and found his work to be incredible. He’s created a series of art where he manipulates the frames and surrounding details to make the pictures come to life. It truly is incredible. Here’s a fun example to start with here, but I highly recommend you scroll through his feed and enjoy.
I’m proud to be a part of NGBN TVs effort to train 100,000 people in “Suicide first-aid” in one day.
This groundbreaking Suicide Prevention program is called “Equip Ourselves to Save a Life.”
NGBN-TVs mission with this initiative is clear: to significantly reduce the incidence of suicide among middle-aged men by equipping them and those around them with the tools and understanding necessary to support themselves and others in crisis.

Need a Coach?
As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.
It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.
When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.
Have you got something big coming up?
Need someone to help organize the path forward?
Let me know what you’re working on and we’ll see if I’m the right fit.
I've spent the last 15 years working with clients as a personal trainer and coach helping them build healthy sustainable habits.
During this time I've learned the psychology of habit creation, the power of systems, and why simple works better.
I'd love to help you reach your goals.
I'm currently looking to add 2 new coaching clients to my roster.
If this sounds interesting to you, connect with me today and let's schedule a call to see if we're a good fit for each other.
