The Good Enough Paradox

Finding The Good While Pursuing Greatness

Big Week Coming!

NGBN TV is scheduled to go live next Monday, January 29th.

So, next Monday I’m going to need your help to reach some high downloads for the new app.

This week you can actually catch me tonight on Decades at 9:30p (YouTube link) so mark your calendars.

This is a fun round table style show where a panel of people from different decades discuss topics and argue about their viewpoints.

I think you’ll enjoy it.

Finally, on Monday, January 29th I’ll be on NGBN live for a launch event interview from 1:45-2:15p EST.

I hope you download the app and come check me out.

Last update, I’ve always been bad about asking for support for this endeavor, and while I hope you choose to continue to enjoy this content, I could use your support.

There are a lot of ways you can support on the website, you could share this with a friend, or you could simply just buy me a coffee.

As always thanks for being here, I appreciate you all.

Today’s Quote

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

Gretchen Rubin

Behind the Pillar

  • Mindset

Have you ever Google searched “good enough quotes?”

It’s funny how many of them come back with quotes trying to make it seem like good is a bad outcome.

Quotes like, “Good enough is never good enough.” -Alfred Bertram Guthrie

“Good is not good enough when better is expected.” -Lou Lamoriello

“Good enough never is.” -Debbi Fields

“Being close ain’t good enough.” -Chris Paul

Now while I appreciate what they’re trying to say.

And quotes are never a picture of the whole thought or belief.

These few quotes are the kind of mindset that turned me into a perfectionist early in my life.

I was never satisfied with what I was doing, where I was at, or the work that I put in.

There was always more I could do.

There was always something I should be improving.

This mindset works for preparation or practice.

It’s good to be constantly looking to improve and strive for more.

The problem comes from when we carry this mindset into performance.

We become stuck and fixated on every little mistake.

We don’t allow ourselves to perform and adapt and flow to the changing situations.

Perfection is the only thing that is acceptable.

And perfection my friends is unattainable.

Too often, we need to be perfect to act.

This good enough isn’t good enough mindset, leads us to stay put.

To fear putting ourselves out there into the world.

This is where the paradox lies.

You need to have a never good enough mindset toward getting better.

A belief deep down that there is more for you to learn and grow.

While also maintaining a this is good enough for now to move forward mindset.

You have to be willing to put things out there before they’re perfect.

You have to share and accept outcomes that aren’t your best.

Good enough is ok.

It’s not the standard for where you want to go.

But knowing how to accept good enough, give you freedom to keep moving forward.

If you can't accept that, you’re going to find yourself stuck.

Constantly working, nitpicking everything, and never being able to put the finishing touches on things.

Because no matter how good you make something, it’s never good enough.

Find a balance between the work you put in being good enough and a desire to constantly get better.

In there you’ll find an ability to move forward and a drive to get better.

It’s a tricky place to find, but once you do, you’ll find a new level of growth.

Remember your good enough, might be incredible to someone else.

Coaches Corner

  • Imposter Syndrome

I feel like taking a moment to talk about imposter syndrome here fits.

Some of the reason why we thing the things we do aren’t good enough, is because we believe someone is doing it better.

We think we’re a fraud.

That people are going to see that I don’t really know what I’m doing.

I don't have it all figured out.

And if I put something out that isn’t great or perfect, I’ll be exposed.

Interestingly enough, most people who comment negatively on my stuff, never post anything original themselves.

They have a lot to say about other people’s thoughts.

But no original thoughts of their own.

I’ve found that remembering how big the world is and how small my perceived bubble of greatness is, makes it easier to take action.

Whether you create content online, speak, write, are an artist, musician, athlete, whatever, the people you follow are rare.

Usually what stops us from wanting to put stuff into the world is comparing our stuff to the people we look up to and follow.

Of the people you follow, how many do you aspire to be like?

10, 100, 1000?

You do realize that if you are not doing your thing because it doesn’t compare to 1000 people you follow, you’re letting .0000125% of the world’s population stop you from acting.

Even if you could name 1,000,000 people ahead of you, that would still be comparing yourself to .0125% of the world.

We struggle because we get shown these shiny, filtered lives.

We see what everyone wants us to see.

This curated version of happiness and success.

The world is full of people trying to figure it out.

The people you look up to and follow, probably have the same fears and doubts that you have.

They’ve just gotten better at acting anyway.

When you start to try to put yourself out there, don’t look at the people ahead of you.

Look at the people you could help that are behind you.

Because I promise you that’s the reason you should be putting yourself out there.

The people ahead of you aren’t even going to know you did anything.

Focus on who you can help now.

And remember like I said above, you’re good enough.

Nick Bare is an athlete that I look up to and appreciate a lot. He is a hybrid athlete and someone who spends a lot of time on his health. Recently he’s became a father and had to adjust his lifestyle a little, and here he shares his normal morning routine.

Routines are super important to creating consistency in our life, this routine is very dialed in. Perhaps there’s something you can pick up from his situation that would work for yours. Good luck.

As many of you know I’m a fan of Andrew Huberman. In this video he dives into sauna and ice bath therapy. This short video gives you a little look at why these activities are important and how they play a role in your health. If you’re someone who’s been curious about the reason for cold and hot and how to apply it to your life, check this video out.

Need a Coach?

As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.

It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.

When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.

Need someone to help organize the path forward?
