Behind the Pillars

  • The interconnectedness of the pillars

Something that I believe wholeheartedly is that greatness a skill.

Actually it’s a combination of skills and traits working together.

Like any skill, we have the ability to improve it.

We have the ability to become greater over time.

It boils down to our ability to learn and apply the 7 pillars; purpose, mindset, resilience, commitment, discipline, courage, and people.

Most people understand these terms.

They know discipline and consistency lead to success.

They’ve heard about mindset and finding purpose.

Resilience and commitment.

If you’re reading this you’ve most likely worked on one or more of these pillars for yourself.

But have you ever worked on how they work together?

Have you ever played around with their connectedness?

It is my belief that most people don’t reach their full potential due to lack of knowledge.

No, most people don’t fail because they don’t know what to do.

They fail because they lack the ability to apply that knowledge to their life.

The Edge of Greatness takes a holistic approach to greatness.

Each pillar works in conjunction with the others.

They feed off each other to provide us a solid foundation to build from.

For example; it’s hard to have discipline without commitment.

The promise of commitment helps hold us accountable to the discipline we’re looking to keep.

But if you’re not sure of your purpose, what are you committing to?

Finding our purpose starts the process for applying the other pillars.

The same holds true in a variety of ways that include resilience, courage, people, and mindset.

This is the reason why people reach different levels of greatness.

You can be very good, even great in some cases, with 3 of the pillars.

But without all 7 you’ll never reach your full potential.

It’s like a team without a point guard.

It’s time to make sure we’re putting out our all-star line up.

Coaches Corner

  • Day 1

Today is Day 1 of softball season.

I haven’t coached in a few seasons and there’s a heightened energy around today.

I’m not nervous, it’s just a scrimmage.

However, I am excited and that excitement has me dialed in.

This focus has me thinking about how we operate.

I believe we like deadlines.

I believe we operate better with them.

When we start living life with no important dates on the calendar it’s easy to drift.

We’re wired for procrastination, and deadlines force us to focus up.

They force us into a state of mild panic as we get closer.

The fear of missing out helps propel us forward.

I think about this newsletter I write each week.

There are always days throughout the week that I can work on it.

I’ve even scheduled it as one of my tasks to do.

But for some reason I’m always right here, Tuesday morning putting it together.

The deadline sparks motivation to get after it.

This is also why putting competitions and events on the calendar can help drive your consistency.

If you know you’re running a marathon, doing a Tough Mudder or Spartan Race in a few months, it’s easier to do the training.

So, how can we tap into this power that comes from a deadline?

  1. Put things on a calendar

  2. Hold yourself to the deadline

  3. Plan with the end in mind

We talked a little about putting things on the calendar, but the more things you start to schedule the better.

Knowing that we only have a limited amount of time to do something is powerful.

But these deadlines are only as powerful as our ability to hold ourselves to them.

If you’re working on something and set a deadline, treat it like a proposal for your boss or a 1 time event.

The first few times you do this it might help to schedule things that actually only happen once.

Some kind of event or specific time.

Often I see people set deadlines for work (writing a book, working out, launching their business) only to move the date.

The deadline doesn’t work if it has legs.

It’s really hard to reach moving goal posts.

Once you establish what you want to do, when you want to do it by, create a plan.

Use the end date and work backwards.

What needs to be done each day to help get you there.

If you’re like me, you’ll still end up doing most of your work last minute.

But planning it out has an ability to create that sense of urgency a little faster.

Once the work starts to pile up and I feel like I might not be able to complete all the tasks, I start getting to work.

Give this a shot and see how it works for you.

A World of Greatness

Known on Instagram as the Hulett Brothers, these two work together to create trick shot magic. They’ve amassed 1.7 million followers by creating trick shots. But this following only happened because they’ve embraced the pillars of greatness. I recently saw a video that shared how long each trick shot took to get, and let’s just say don’t stick with things this long without purpose, resilience, commitment, discipline, mindset, people and then you don’t post it without courage. Check out this video.

I recently stumbled across science with Mrs. B on Instagram and loved the way she was teaching. She’s created a pretty substantial following, but has embraced greatness by inspiring young people to enjoy science. Her videos are educational and entertaining and the kids reactions are awesome. Check out this video here, and keep crushing it Nancy.

I’m proud to be a part of NGBN TVs effort to train 100,000 people in “Suicide first-aid” in one day.

This groundbreaking Suicide Prevention program is called “Equip Ourselves to Save a Life.”

NGBN-TVs mission with this initiative is clear: to significantly reduce the incidence of suicide among middle-aged men by equipping them and those around them with the tools and understanding necessary to support themselves and others in crisis.

Need a Coach?

As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.

It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.

When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.

Have you got something big coming up?

Need someone to help organize the path forward?

Let me know what you’re working on and we’ll see if I’m the right fit.

I've spent the last 15 years working with clients as a personal trainer and coach helping them build healthy sustainable habits.

During this time I've learned the psychology of habit creation, the power of systems, and why simple works better.

I'd love to help you reach your goals.

I'm currently looking to add 2 new coaching clients to my roster.

If this sounds interesting to you, connect with me today and let's schedule a call to see if we're a good fit for each other.
