Exploring Greatness Issue #8

The Power of Belief

Greatness is Coming!

We're already up to 6 confirmed speakers for the 2023 Edge of Greatness Summit. I haven't even started reaching out to the majority of potential speakers. The goal this year is to reach 30 speakers which would double last year's effort. This year's event will take place the first weekend of October.

If you're interested in sponsoring a portion of the event we have a couple different packages available that could suit your needs. You can email me at [email protected] or by responding to this email. Over the next few weeks I'll also begin early sign ups, and discounted premium access. I'm excited for what this year can bring.

Quick Question

1 Quote

If you believe you can, you probably can. If you believe you won't, you most assuredly won't. Belief is the ignition switch that gets you off the launching pad.

2 Lessons

  • Belief is a powerful mindset

Another 15 seed, defeated a 2 seed the other day to start off March Madness.

Princeton pulled off an incredible upset over Arizona.

But did you know prior to 1991 no 15 seed had ever won?

Then Richmond defeated Syracuse to become the first.

2 years later it happened again when Santa Clara beat Arizona.

Now, it's been three tournaments in a row that a 15 seed has won it's opening round game.

Then something amazing happened Friday night.

16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson defeated 1 seed Purdue 63-58.

This marked only the second such win by a 16 seed.

Prior to UMBC's win over Virginia in 2018, 16 seeds were 0-132.

Now, just 5 years later we see this upset happen again.

So what changed?

Why have we seen such a shift?

Belief.

It's now seen as possible.

There's no longer a stigma to being a 15 seed or even a 16 seed as an automatic early exit.

You've seen it even more with lower seeds like 13 and 12.

Now days you almost expect a couple 12 seeds to pull off upsets.

This mindset of belief helps these smaller schools find strength in tough moments.

But it also hurts the higher seeds when the game gets tight.

In the back of their minds, they start to think about being the next big upset.

They play tighter.

They play defensive and scared.

Then before they know it, it's too late to recover.

This is a similar phenomena to when Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile barrier.

It was believed to be impossible.

Yet, once it was done once, it happened several more times almost immediately after.

Often we need to see something happen to believe it's possible.

But if you can see a result before it happens and create a clear image of that success, you start to set yourself on the path of achieving it.

This has to be a deep belief.

Something that can't be shaken by setbacks or failure.

This kind of mindset is the mindset of greatness.

Great minds believe anything is possible.

They believe that there is a solution out there for every obstacle.

Start to believe you have what it takes to achieve your dreams.

See the end result you want and chase it with everything.

It just takes one win to change what the world believes is possible.

Why can't you be the first?

  • View Fear as an Ally

The other day I had an incredible conversation with Kristen Ulmer.

We spent almost an entire hour talking about fear.

You can listen to the full episode later today here.

But during our conversation we talked about how fear is always with us.

You can't eliminate fear.

You can talk with fear, though.

You can build a better relationship with fear.

Through this better relationship we become more comfortable with living with fear.

To act with fear.

We start to appear to be more brave.

We haven't really changed, we have just accepted fear.

We've accepted that it is there.

We act anyway.

We use fear as a tool to help us be more focused on the task at hand.

If you watch when a favored team loses in these tournament games, you will see the presence of fear.

They start to act out of character.

They hesitate.

They make more mistakes.

There is an uncertainty of what to do next.

This happens because they refuse to accept fear.

Fear then starts to control them.

They can't focus on what they need to do to execute because they're overwhelmed with the thoughts of failing.

They have lost before the game is over.

The next time you find yourself in a high pressure situation, acknowledge your fear.

Accept that it's there.

Own it.

Ask why it's there so strong in this moment?

How can you start to work with your fear to accomplish the task?

See if you find your fear start to dissipate.

Fear is always going to be there.

Learn to live with it.

Learn to talk with it and understand why it's there.

Watch your performance begin to improve.

Mind, Body, Spirit

Mind:

I recently watched this interesting video about creating habits that I think you will enjoy. It's called the Two Day Rule by Matt D'Avella and it's a fantastic approach to building the habits you want in your life. Good luck.

Body:

Recently found Ryan Humiston on YouTube and found his videos to be entertaining and extremely informative at the same time. Fair warning, he uses plenty of choice words, but if you're ok with this you'll learn something pretty great in this video. This particular video is all about mobility so we can start moving better.

Spirit:

If you've been with me for the last few weeks you'd notice that this section has changed slightly. With this new change to a mind, body, spirit approach, I felt starting with meditation made the most sense here. This video about meditation is brought to you by Andrew Huberman. It's a long video, but if you're just curious you'll find the first five minutes will expose you to many benefits of meditation.

Coaching Available

I'm often surprised to hear people didn't know that I offer coaching. So, I want to remove any doubt, I provide coaching. If you find yourself struggling in any of the 7 pillars of greatness, I'd love to help you get re-aligned. Not sure what your practice or work should look like, struggling with discipline or mindset, need to become more resilient or courageous, perhaps you're not sure what your purpose is who you should have on your team; I can help.
