The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.

The Power of Change
It’s amazing how much we become creatures of habit.
Routines and daily activities occupy our entire day.
We become angry or frustrated if something throws us off our normal trajectory.
Take a look at your life right now.
How consistent are you?
Some people think they’re dealing with change and chaos, but it’s still scheduled.
I’m speaking to all the sports parents out there.
You may be playing at a different location, but Tuesday is still game night.
I’m talking about making real change in your life.
Disrupting everything and seeing what happens.
The only reason I’m seeing this from a different perspective is because I recently packed up my family and moved.
We didn’t move super far, but it’s been challenging none-the-less.
Three kids, new house, 13 years worth of stuff.
It’s been a lot.
And in the process there has been a lot of change.
I haven’t been able to work for several weeks (I’ve still got a few more until I am fully back).
My workout routine has been smashed.
Our normal bedtimes, wake times, and everything are all being built again.
Chaos.
But within the chaos there is something interesting I found.
When we throw away our routines we find what is truly important to us.
We find the things that truly matter.
Because we’re not just being driven by programmed responses to do something.
We’re moving because we want to.
Yesterday I did pull-ups at the park with my kids.
I’ve done thousands of push-ups.
Exercise is important to me, and even without a routine or gym I’ve found a way.
We find ways to do the things we care about.
Now, I’m not saying that you should move your family in order to find out what matters most in your life, but I am saying embrace the changes that happen.
Look for what you can add of value from the change.
It’s in the changes we face that we can learn to grow in new ways.
We are extremely adaptable people.
But we must learn how to change to tap into that power.
What powerful changes have you made lately?
A New Optimization
There’s another thing that’s happening during this move that is going to take some getting used to.
My wife is going from working Mon-Thur to Tues-Fri.
It may not seem like much, but it will be a new schedule for me to adapt to.
I’m used to getting a lot of work done on Monday to start the week.
Now, Monday’s will be spent between a few little things and spending time with my kids.
I can still work on Monday, but I need to adjust.
I’m not going to be doing podcast interviews with 3 little kids running through the house.
It will have to be morning work.
It will have to be things that don’t require quiet.
Her Tuesday schedule is a little different too.
It’s a late start, so she won’t be going into work until 11a.
But she’s also going to be working until 8p.
Now, I know I’m sharing a lot of details about her and my schedule that doesn’t apply to you, but here’s why.
In the change I’ve found something interesting.
By reducing my hours I’ve created a schedule of action that I believe will be more productive.
It will give me space to complete my work and release my newsletter, podcast, social posts and have the time I’m looking for.
I wouldn’t have found this without change.
Without being forced into a new routine.
Now, I’m going to be adjusting some things, but I won’t have lose anything.
I’m just working to find a new optimal schedule of production.
This coming week I want you to try something.
Remove a work day.
Take a full day off for yourself.
I don’t care what day, but no work allowed.
I want you to notice something when you shrink your work window.
Do you become more productive in the work times you have allotted for yourself?
When I have less time to get things done, I do better work.
I become more productive.
The change forces me out of autopilot.
Perhaps it can do the same for you.
Mind, Body, Spirit
Mind:
This is a fun and interesting video from Simon Sinek about how navigate and embrace change. Change is something that we should all be seeking. We’re all works in progress, and we’re never done improving, which requires change.
Body:
In this TED talk by Wendy Suzuki, she dives into the mind-changing benefits of exercise. Not only does exercise help our bodies, but it improves our brain’s function and helps us to think better. Check out this video and see what positive changes happen by doing a little exercise.
Spirit:
Learning to control your breathing is an incredible way to connect to our spirit. It creates a sense of peace in our life and connects us to the world. In this TED Talk by Lucas Rockwood he dives into the power of our breath and how learning to control your breath can change your life.
