Exploring Greatness Issue #23

Finding Greatness in Unique Places

Quick Update

It’s officially moving week.

There’s still a lot to do, but I’m excited for what’s to come next.

I am modifying this week again due to time, but I didn’t want to completely disappear during the move.

I’m looking forward to settling back into a more normal routine of things, but in the meantime we adapt and move forward.

I’d still love to hear from you during this crazy time, so if you have any questions or if there’s any way I can help you send me an email [email protected].

1 Quick Thought

I’ve spent a good portion of the last week and a half painting.

I’m talking hours and hours of painting.

Most people dislike painting.

I can totally appreciate why, but I look at it differently.

I’ve found it to be a great teacher of greatness.

Here’s 4 reasons why:

  1. You can’t rush it

  2. Attention to detail is vital

  3. You always have to go back over your work

  4. You must find joy in the monotony

You can’t rush it.

Painting, just like greatness, takes time.

You can’t rush it.

There are no shortcuts.

And the faster you try to go the bigger the mess you make.

We all want things quickly, myself included.

But, the best things in life don’t come fast.

They take time.

They’re slow.

Painting forces that patience.

Attention to detail is vital.

While the larger portions of the wall seem like you can just auto-pilot through, the truth is we must always be paying attention.

There are a lot of details we must be aware of.

You must pay attention to where you set the paint (so you don’t step in it).

You must be aware of light switches and outlets.

You must pay attention to where you’re painting so you don’t paint the wrong part.

Then you must absolutely pay attention when cutting in.

The edge pieces at the top and bottom of the wall are crucial to making the job look good.

If you mess those up, the whole project starts to look like a mess.

It’s funny how a small part can make such a big difference.

But that is true in most things.

You always have to go back over your work.

There’s always a second coat.

Even if you had great coverage on your first pass, there will always be spots that need your attention.

The work needs you to give it another pass.

Our greatest work often needs more attention.

A second pass.

Another set of eyes.

Perhaps even an entire second coat.

But this is a great reminder that we are constantly adding to ourself.

Just like the wall needs more paint, we often need more time.

More knowledge.

More practice.

You must find joy in the monotony.

I think most people don’t like painting because a good portion of it is boring.

It’s the same movements, over and over, and over, and over.

Roller up and down

Brush the trim.

Repeat.

For hours.

Then you have to let the paint dry and start again.

But the truth is most things we want to become good at require us doing the basic skills over and over again.

Becoming so good at the basics that people can’t stop us is a prerequisite for success.

We can’t just jump to expert level.

We must master the small, boring stuff first.

Painting is like learning the basic skills on repeat.

There are many teachers of greatness in our life.

Perhaps you’re doing one right now.

It’s important to start to look for these types of takeaways when you’re stuck in difficult situations.

Knowing that I was learning a lesson in greatness made my painting a whole lot more enjoyable.

Find the lesson in your current situation.

What is this moment teaching you?

There’s always something you can take away from your situation.

You just have to be willing to look for it.

Here’s a little before and after.
