Exploring Greatness Issue #20
The Most Important Step Is The Next Step
Quick Update
Sorry I missed you guys last week.
I had every intention of writing something, but with vacation coming to an end and starting a new week as Mr. Mom, it was a lot.
We’ve only got a few weeks left before we move and it’s going to be a busy couple weeks.
I’m spending everyday with my 3 kids.
It’s a fun time around here these days, but it also challenges me because I want to do work, and right now it’s not in the cards.
I’m writing these posts over the weekend, but it’s about all I have time for.
Anyway, that’s enough about me, let’s get to the good stuff.
1 Quote
It’s not a failure; it’s steps to success. There’s always steps to it. Michael Jordan played 15 years, won 6 championships. The other 9 years was a failure? That’s what you’re telling me? It’s a wrong question; there’s no failure in sports.
2 Lessons
Every Step Is a Step Toward Greatness
Win or Lose.
Succeed or Fail.
Every step is a step closer to greatness.
If you want it to be.
Sure, nobody wants to lose or fail, but those who find excellence in their life see these moments different than everyone else.
Instead of seeing these moments as setbacks or shortcomings, they’re simply steps in the process to something greater.
There is no failing amongst the elite.
They see each moment as a step forward.
Each misstep or failure is a learning opportunity to future success.
It’s a secret superpower that we can use too.
A simple mindset shift from expecting success at every turn can lead us down a path of long-term excellence.
Nobody wins all the time.
Even the greatest winners of all time lose.
In fact some of the best winners of all time lost a lot.
In sports you have people like:
Magic Johnson won 73.95% of all of his games (compiled 236 losses)
Tim Duncan won over 1,000 games in his career and lost 391.
Cy Young won 511 games as a pitcher (the most in MLB history) and lost 316.
Tom Brady won 251 games including 7 Super Bowls and lost 84 games.
These types of failures exist in business as well.
Companies like Apple, Starbucks, and Amazon all had very difficult and challenging times in their existence that many other companies wouldn’t have survived.
Learning to use the bad to grow and develop leads to greater long-term success.
It starts with your ability to avoid looking at outcomes.
An outcome often has things that you can’t control.
Instead shift to a more process based approach.
If you performed your process well, and you feel good about your process stick to it.
If over time you’re getting the same result, perhaps it’s time to adjust your process.
But only that process should be looked at.
The outcome isn’t something you can change or control.
Give this approach a try and see what changes come about in your life.
The World Owes You Nothing.
Working toward your first win or been successful 1,000 times, it doesn’t matter.
The world cares little about your previous success or lack there of.
Nothing is owed to you in this world.
If you’ve never had a break, just keep working.
If you’ve had success, just keep working.
If you’re somewhere in the middle, just keep working.
The world rewards hard work.
But there is no guarantee when that reward will come.
Some people work for a lifetime only to achieve their little bit of success right before the end.
Some hit it big early on then never see the same success again in their life.
And others work through the struggles to find a way to create lasting success.
But it is only through the work that lasting success is possible.
It is only through the struggles that we learn how to grow.
It’s time to focus forward.
What’s your next move?
What’s your next step?
Stop telling people about how hard you’ve worked.
Stop worrying about all the hours you’ve put in already.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself that you haven’t made it yet.
There is no timeline to this.
Every journey is different, but one thing is certain the world owes you nothing.
There is no gift or reward coming to you from the world for all of your struggles and sacrifices.
This is not how it works.
Expecting something to be handed to you is a surefire way to never see the success you dream of.
Instead, focus your efforts.
Dial in your work.
Find a love for what you do that allows you to work harder and keep going.
Every great has struggled at some point in their journey.
They didn’t find their way through because they were given a gift.
They found their way through because they continued to work.
They continued to grow.
They continued to look for new and meaningful ways to apply themselves.
And eventually, they found themselves in a place they could win.
Nobody lands on top of the mountain.
And nobody deserves a ski lift to the summit.
We all must climb.
Some climbs are longer than others, but some mountains are taller too.
Just keep climbing.
Don’t give up hope.
Search for your next move.
I hope you continue to climb long enough to finally see what the view is like from the top.
Mind, Body, Spirit
Mind:
Have you ever utilized fear-setting? Not sure what fear-setting is? That’s ok. Check out this video of Tim Ferris speaking on the TED stage. We all have fears. Often they stop us from taking action. We can change this. It starts with owning that we have these fears and setting them in front of us. Take the first step.
Body:
Are you struggling to get your workouts in? Is your work exhausting? Do you feel beat at the end of the day and just want to sit? Perhaps there’s a different approach you can take. Check out this short clip from Jocko Willink about ways to work around and fix your exercise approach when you do hard work.
Spirit:
I’ve been working on building my spirituality recently. Perhaps you have a desire to build a deeper connection as well. But where do you start? How do you start? This video was a very interesting watch. We’re all on a spiritual journey, but some of us are more aware of it than others. It’s time to become more aware.
