Exploring Greatness Issue #10

We Are People of Purpose

2023 Edge of Greatness Summit

We're making progress.

I'm now up to 9 confirmed presenters for this year's summit. I'm excited about the range of speakers that will be sharing their stories of greatness. I've also settled on the first weekend in October as the event date.

If you attended last year's virtual event, this year will be very similar. I'm excited about the growth and looking forward to all the new viewer experiences I'll be working to create.

If you're interested in sponsoring a portion of the event we have a couple different packages available that could suit your needs. You can email me at [email protected] or by responding to this email. Over the next few weeks I'll also begin early sign ups, and discounted premium access. I'm excited for what this year can bring.

Small Change

If you have been a regular to this newsletter, first I would like to say thank you. Second, you probably noticed that it is in fact Tuesday, not Sunday. Going forward, new issues will release every Tuesday. After my test issue the other day I found that this day appears to work better for everyone (based on a single data point and test). So, don't be surprised if for a little while my issues jump around (you know, science and all). Thank you for all your support.

The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The work of life is to develop it. The meaning of life is to give your gift away.

  • Finding Purpose

A lot of people mess this up.

But, it's not their fault.

It's the pull of passion that confuses them.

Passion has a powerful hold on all of us.

It motivates and excites us to chase things.

However, if the passion isn't fully aligned with purpose, it will not last.

I've had several passions throughout my life.

Thankfully, many of these passions have aligned with my greater purpose.

Even with this alignment, my journey has shifted over time.

This happens because as we age, so too does our understanding of how we can best fulfill our purpose.

As a young boy I thought my purpose was to pursue greatness for myself.

I believed that my purpose was to achieve great athletic feats.

Then it became about coaching athletes to achieve their greatness.

And now, it's about teaching the principles of greatness to everyone.

Teaching that greatness can be achieved in any field.

Any endeavor can lead to greatness.

I hope to help people realize their full potential in this world.

And along the way, find their purpose.

Find what gives them strength and motivates them to action.

My passions have evolved from one of selfish desire to service.

But there has always been a common thread of elite performance.

My purpose has always been driven by understanding greatness.

Understanding performance.

Understanding excellence.

What is your ultimate purpose?

Why are you here?

This question must be answered before you can achieve your maximum potential.

Without this strong understanding and pull, you will waiver when things get tough.

And things will always get tough.

With a strong understanding of your purpose, you will endure.

You will thrive through the adversity.

You will win.

What's your north star?

  • Blinded by Passion

Passion is a trick.

The idea of follow your passion is a lie.

Now, I'm not saying you should aim to be passionate about things.

Or that you shouldn't try to find passion in your purpose.

What I'm saying is, passion is a trickster.

It makes you believe that you're doing what you're meant to be doing.

It makes you believe that you've found your calling.

But, passion is only on the surface.

You must go deeper.

Take a moment and think about all the things you've been passionate about.

Here's a few of mine:

  • Archeology

  • Dinosaurs

  • Basketball

  • Baseball

  • Photography

  • Woodworking

  • Grilling

  • Coaching

  • Weightlifting

  • Writing

  • Leadership

As you can see there have been a few things.

But passions change.

They evolve.

They're not what we're looking for.

I still enjoy many of these passions, but within a understanding of my purpose.

This is what I'm asking you to understand.

You can be passionate about a great many things.

But until you find your driving force.

Your purpose.

You run the risk of chasing every next joyful thing.

You will jump from one passion to the next as the flame of the last goes out.

Without purpose you forget to feed the fire.

If you're not willing to tend the fire, it will eventually extinguish.

Take a step back from passion.

Lean deeper into purpose.

Enjoy passions in your life, but be weary of following every one.

Not all passions are created equal.

Mind, Body, Spirit

Mind:

I recently shared a conversation with Dr. Trevor Kashey for The Edge of Greatness Podcast and loved the way he presented on complex topics. His ability to tap into our mind to achieve goals is incredible. In this video he touches on his S->R->O model to achieve success in the weight room. Or in his words, "Your Brain is Stopping You from Getting Jacked."

Body:

I've mentioned Michael Easter a handful of times in this newsletter, and I have enjoyed his work including his book The Comfort Crisis. But today, I've got a video about improving our health through rucking. Why should we ruck? Check out this video and find out what you can achieve through rucking.

Spirit:

Last week I shared a video about the benefits of meditation. This week check out this short 5-minute video for guided meditation. When it comes to meditation, start slow and be patient with yourself. Slowing down is hard, it takes some time to improve.

Coaching Available

I'm often surprised to hear people didn't know that I offer coaching. So, I want to remove any doubt, I provide coaching. If you find yourself struggling in any of the 7 pillars of greatness, I'd love to help you get re-aligned. Not sure what your practice or work should look like, struggling with discipline or mindset, need to become more resilient or courageous, perhaps you're not sure what your purpose is who you should have on your team; I can help.

If you'd like to schedule an introductory call reply to this email and let's get on a call.
