Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.

Behind the Pillars

  • Discipline

The drive to greatness is hard because you’re going to have to show up when yo don’t want to.

This is where discipline comes into play.

Discipline is our do it anyway muscle.

There are many sacrifices on the way to success.

Time sacrifices, relationship sacrifices, energy sacrifices.

Sacrifices are often uncomfortable.

And because you’re a human (or at least I assume you are) you seek comfort.

We all do.

But we can develop discipline.

We can create systems and routines to help us.

We can mold our mind to take on the challenges of every day.

This is all possible, but it takes time, and it takes a little discipline.

I’ve noticed that discipline is severely lacking today.

We’re run by our emotions.

We’re controlled by how we feel about a task or thing.

Too often we skip things because “I don’t like that.”

Success is built on doing the things you have to do, not the things you want to do.

It doesn’t take any discipline to pull up a seat on the couch and pop on Netflix.

It doesn’t take any discipline to sleep in til 11a on your off day.

Discipline is there to help you navigate the tasks that you know suck, but you do them anyway.

So the real question is how do we develop more discipline?

  • Developing Discipline

I’ve always been highly motivated to get things done.

I was driven, but I wouldn’t say I was disciplined.

At least not until I got older.

Then I need more reasons to show up and do the various hard tasks in my life.

I needed more discipline.

Thankfully, my drive to be great early in life armed me with these tools.

If you were so lucky, here's 3 ways to start to build your discipline.

  1. Be committed

Commitment to the thing we want to build discipline around is key.

If you want to start a fitness habit, make a commitment to getting to the gym x number of times.

Make a commitment to eating healthier.

If you want to improve a skill, make a commitment to practicing that skill.

Set goals and benchmarks for success.

Whatever the thing you are after is, commit to doing what is necessary to improve it.

To succeed at it.

It is 1000x easier to be discipline to a thing that we’re committed to.

If you’ve committed to running a marathon in 2 months, you’re going to be a lot more likely to follow the plan.

To be discipline to your practice runs.

It’s hard to be disciplined to a task you don’t like and have not committed to doing it well.

  1. Practice doing hard things

This is where my drive to be a great athlete helped me with my discipline.

I have been doing hard things for most of my life.

Challenging myself in a variety of ways has been my way of life.

Whether it was a physical challenge or mental challenge I leaned into the hard things.

Now, I think it’s important to remember that something as simple as doing something you don’t want to do has a positive return.

Doing one thing per day that you dislike or don’t want to do, trains you to be more discipline.

Whether that’s going for a run, a cold shower, writing in your journal, doing your workout, shoveling the drive when it snows, mowing the grass, washing the dishes.

The thing itself does not matter.

It’s the act of doing something you don’t want to.

If you can do one thing you don’t want to do every day, you start to flex that muscle.

Your discipline is getting stronger.

  1. Write down your tasks for the day.

Once it’s written it becomes similar to a commitment.

Now, because you want to make sure you’re actually building discipline start small.

Write one thing.

What’s the most important thing today to accomplish that would make today a success.

This isn’t your to do list.

This is a blueprint.

And just like a blueprint on a building project, the items aren’t optional.

You can skip things on a to do list.

You can’t mess around when it comes to a blueprint, or the house is falling down.

So determine which task you’re going to do today, no matter what.

Do that task.

As you get better, you can add a second task.

Never do more than 3.

After 3 you start to run the risk of turning your list into a to do list and you’ll start jumping around and skipping things.

Start small, do it daily, never miss twice.

By embracing these 3 things I’ve built my discipline up over the years.

I’m able to handle a lot more tasks and stay focused on the things I have to do.

So remember:

  1. Be committed

  2. Do hard things

  3. Write it down

Good luck out there.

My friend Jason B. Dutton has been working on creating a book for over 7 years. He’s be relentlessly pursuing this moment and just last week it finally came. He is now a published author. Through all the ups and downs, he stuck with it. He bet on himself and he’s now able to say something few people ever do, I’m an author. Congratulations brother, super excited for you.

Something I look forward to every Super Bowl season is the chance to see an epic commercial. Ones like the ones from my childhood. The ones I still talk about today, decades later. In recent years, this has been a sore spot for me. This year; however, I feel we saw some truly great commercials.

Here’s two of my favorites: Paramount+ and Kawasaki

Need a Coach?

As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.

It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.

When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.

Have you got something big coming up?

Need someone to help organize the path forward?

Let me know what you’re working on and we’ll see if I’m the right fit.

I've spent the last 15 years working with clients as a personal trainer and coach helping them build healthy sustainable habits.

During this time I've learned the psychology of habit creation, the power of systems, and why simple works better.

I'd love to help you reach your goals.

I'm currently looking to add 2 new coaching clients to my roster.

If this sounds interesting to you, connect with me today and let's schedule a call to see if we're a good fit for each other.
