Change is Hard
Staying the Same is Harder
Get Caught Up
Incase you’ve missed anything, here’s a bunch of links to what you might have missed.
Today’s Quote
A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.
Behind the Pillars
Get Coached
I was coached yesterday.
For the first time in a long time I was coached like an athlete.
I’ve been guided, I’ve been taught, but yesterday I was coached.
Growth is made beyond our comfort zone.
For a while now I’ve been making content on my own.
And while I have high standards, it was relatively comfortable.
Yesterday, however, I got pushed beyond my comfort zone.
I was challenged with hard questions and hard truths about what I was creating.
And I’m grateful.
It’s been a long time since I was coached that way.
And I’m grateful.
Too often we find ourselves in a world where nobody gives us the real feedback need.
We get a lot of the sugar coated versions of feedback.
Everything’s great, but I might do this little thing different.
People point out a small, insignificant part they know doesn’t matter so it won’t hurt you.
Real coaching needs to feel like a gut punch every now and then.
Real coaching needs to force deep introspection.
Real coaching isn’t all about pumping you up.
Because of this, real coaching can only happen when there’s trust.
Real coaching can only come from a place of love.
A lot of people don’t get real coaching anymore.
When was the last time after a conversation you felt challenged.
You fell like you were in a place where you need overcome an obstacle.
Growth isn’t comfortable.
But I’m not sure many people are truly feeling the discomfort needed to grow.
Hard work isn't the discomfort the leads to success.
Everyone “works hard.”
The growth we seek is from deeper, hard work is a prerequisite for the course.
If you want to truly grow, find people willing to give you 3 things.
The hard truths
The tools to fix it
Love and support
Then you know you’re in a place that you can grow.
Coaches Corner
Change is Hard
Like I mentioned above I was coached yesterday.
That means nothing if I’m not willing to change.
This means I’m going to have to start to create new operating procedures to get more out of myself.
When creating change I have 3 principles that I follow:
Aim small, miss small
Never Miss Twice
One Step Rule
Let’s look deeper.
Aim Small, Miss Small
If you're a Mel Gibson fan you’ve surely heard this before.
The key to why he was such a great shot was aim small, miss small.
I love that movie.
For you, what this means is when you’re looking to change think small.
Aim for small changes.
The smaller the better.
Because when we approach change, we need wins over big losses.
Even if your loss led to more progress, our brain feels as if we failed.
We didn’t hit our target.
You can always do more, but aim small, stack wins, soak up the dopamine of success.
Never Miss Twice
When building change into your life you’re going to miss.
There are going to be days that don’t line up with the new changes you’re trying to make and you will fall short.
One miss is ok, but never miss twice.
Just like small wins releases dopamine and you start to feel good about your progress.
Multiple misses does the opposite.
We can bounce back from one miss easy, two misses becomes increasingly harder, and once you reach three there’s little chance you’re coming back.
Success is built out of consistency, and consistency is achieved by not letting one miss turn into two.
One Step Rule
Once the excitement of the new thing you’re pursuing wears off, motivation will fade with it.
There’s often excitement when we commit to a change.
We’re going to learn a new skill, lose weight at the gym, write a book, prep for a marathon.
The early stages have an energy to them.
But as time passes and we realize there’s still a long way to go, motivation fades.
This is where the one step rule comes in.
No matter how you feel take one step.
If that’s all you take today, fine, but you’ve got to take one.
If you don’t feel like working out today you’re one step could be:
Put on your workout shoes
Start your warm up
Just show up at the gym
Whatever your task is, look at the smallest action you can take toward achieving your goal.
You have small daily goals, take one step toward that goal.
What I’ve found is getting started is often our biggest road block to success.
Once you get moving, the motivation follows.
I know this was a lot today, and I hope it was helpful.
If you’d like more about this feel free to reply to this email and we an talk more.
Remember, change is hard.
Set yourself up for success, not failure.

I’m proud to be a part of NGBN TVs effort to train 100,000 people in “Suicide first-aid” in one day.
This groundbreaking Suicide Prevention program is called “Equip Ourselves to Save a Life.”
NGBN-TVs mission with this initiative is clear: to significantly reduce the incidence of suicide among middle-aged men by equipping them and those around them with the tools and understanding necessary to support themselves and others in crisis.

Need a Coach?
As an athlete I always appreciated good coaching.
It often made the difference between a successful season and an average one.
When you’ve got big goal to compete at the highest level, it helps to have someone looking at the big picture, while you focus on the specific actions.
Have you got something big coming up?
Need someone to help organize the path forward?
Let me know what you’re working on and we’ll see if I’m the right fit.
